Orchids are one of the most adored flowers and plants around the world. They are known for their delicate appearance with thin, tall stems, beautiful, delicate-looking flowers, and hypnotic fragrances. Orchids grow around the world in different climates, environments, and regions with wide variety.
Many people think that Orchid plants are really hard to grow and care for. The opposite is actually true! Though they are elegant and beautiful, these flowers are actually really easy to grow and maintain, regardless of the environment. Orchids grow all over the globe, apart from in the most icy and cold countries.
They are both able to adapt in the wild and in conditions at home. They make a wonderful gift for someone you care about or could be a lovely little addition to any home office/studio you might have. We will explain all the best practices for watering orchids and why you will love how easy they are to care for!
The Golden rule
It is important to first be made firmly aware that orchids are hardy, durable flowers when it comes to their living conditions. It is always better to be underwater than overwater. Overwatering will inevitably lead to root rot and that can lead to disease which will probably end your Orchid’s life early.
Detecting When To Water
Due to the fact that everyone’s home will be different in its humidity, temperature, light exposure, etc, it’s best to get good at detecting when you need to water your orchid rather than setting a firm watering schedule.
It is best to simply use your finger to detect when to water. Submerging your finger a couple of centimeters into the soil should feel pretty dry. Then, it is time to water. If you’re unsure and think it might be too early, it probably is. In this instance ensure you take an extra day before you water.
How To Water
Firstly, it’s best to water your Orchid early in the morning. This will ensure maximum water evaporation and reduce the likelihood of you drowning it. If your home is warm or has a lower humidity level, you’ll want to water slightly more often. There really isn’t a general rule of thumb for days you should wait between watering.

You should use lukewarm water with each watering as it replicates the type of water orchids receive in the wild. You’ll want to allow it to drain for around 15 minutes so that all of the water can be absorbed in the soil and by the plant before adding more water. It may look dry but it is sufficient.
Misting/Humidity
Humidity varies when it comes to orchids but generally, they enjoy fairly high humidity. Anywhere from the 40-70% region is amazing. If you can’t place them in a humid place where these conditions are met, you might consider misting them.
Mist in the middle of the day when it is warmer. This will allow for a decent amount of evaporation from the leaves and the flowers. Do a spritz or two every other day to ensure the humidity levels are met.
