English name:Foxtail Fern
Latin name:Asparagus densiflorus 'Myers'
About me:I have gorgeous, upright, emerald plumes that look like a fox's tail!
Useful to know:
I am native to South Africa.
I am a moderate grower and can reach up to 1.2 metres in height and 90cm in width.
I like a bright spot but keep me out of the midday sun.
Water me thoroughly, allowing soil to dry out a little between waterings. Too much water can lead to root rot. In winter water more sparingly but more frequently.
I am not too fussy but prefer a room temperature between 16-24 C.
Feed me monthly in the growing season with a balanced house plant fertilizer diluted by half.
Cut back my stems to keep me compact and bushy. Trim off old, faded fronds to make room for new growth and to keep me looking its best.
I prefers moist air so you could set my pot on a tray of wet pebbles and mist my leaves regularly.
I can produce berries which are toxic to pets so keep me away from pets and kids! My berries can be germinated to produce additional plants.
I am not a true fern, but a member of the lily family. It's also in the same family as the edible asparagus vegetable.
