Ponytail Palm

English name:

Ponytail Palm

Latin name:

Beaucarnea/Nolina Recurvata

About me:

It stores water in it's swollen base and stem. When grown as a single stemmed form it certainly deserves it's other common name of Elephant's Foot. A very forgiving and versatile plant. The added stem height makes it ideal as a floor standing specimen to add a touch of the exotic.

Useful to know:

Origin

I come from eastern Mexico.

Height/Growth

I am a very slow grower although I have reached 30ft in the wild!

Light

I love lots of light, especially sunshine but I can withstand lower light too.

Water

I'm drought-resistant but like water every 2-3 weeks. Please don't overwater me as I can get root rot. You can add some fertiliser to my soil in Spring or Summer but don't fuss with me.

Temperature

Keep me away from cold draughts.

Feeding

Trim old browning leaves from the top forcing the leaves to grown downwards like a ponytail.

Grooming

Trim old browning leaves from the top forcing the leaves to grown downwards like a ponytail.

Care

Snip off any ends that go dark.

Toxicity

Like all begonias, I am toxic when ingested.

Fact

During the flowering season (spring to autumn) I produce white flowers in a cluster on a single flower stem.
