The olive tree is an attractive, slow-growing evergreen, native to Mediterranean Europe, Asia, and Africa. It forms a rounded head of small, silvery-grey leaves and loves hot, dry conditions. Tiny white flowers appear in the summer, followed by small, round green olives that ripen to black.
It may be harder to produce fully ripened olives in the UK as these plants require a lot of heat and shelter. We recommend growing your olive tree in a large pot and moving it into a greenhouse or conservatory over the winter months.
With the right care, Olea europaeas can live for over 600 years! The oldest olive tree is claimed to be 5000 years old and resided in Chania, Crete.
