This eye-catching plant gets its common name, 'Frozen Planet', from its beautiful maroon stems and green, edged leaves that look as if they are covered in frost. The gorgeous Xanthosoma sagittifolium bears resemblance to Alocasias in terms of appearance, but as little is known about this new and exciting variety, whether they are actually related is unknown.
Native to Central America and South America, the Frozen Planet plant is actually used in some Surinamese cooking. The leaves and stems contain protein and vitamins and are used in an oven baked dish called Pom. (But we wouldn't recommend trying this at home unless you know exactly what you're doing!)
How to Care For Your Frozen Planet
Find your plant a bright spot out of direct sunlight (as this may scorch its leaves). Rotate your plant regularly so that it grows evenly and water frequently, finding a good balance - do not let the plant dry out or sit in water. Mist often to increase humidity levels, especially in warmer weather.
