Dumb Cane 'Tropic Snow'
Dieffenbachia seguine 'Tropic Snow'
The common name really doesn't suit this wonderfully patterned tropical plant. Dumb? We think not. It's a mighty air purifier plus the patterns on the leaves will keep you staring in awe for hours. As for its Latin name, this Brazilian native was brought to Europe by Austrian explorer Joseph Dieffenbach in the 19th century. It likes a bright spot but not direct sun and likes moist soil but not soggy.
I might be called a Dumb Cane, but I'm not dumb looking. I have big, tear shaped leaves, normally flecked with yellow.
Growing pot size: 24cm
Overall plant height including growing pot: 80-90cm
Pets: Keep away from nibbly pets
Useful to know:
I come from Brazil.
I'm fairly fast growing and can reach between 1m and 1m 20.
I prefer bright, indirect light but can tolerate light shade. Lower light levels reduce the rate of growth and dull my leaves, but direct sunlight will scorch them.
When the top inches of my soil start to dry out, give me a drink, but don't overwater me.
My ideal temperature is between 18-24°C but I can cope with as low as 10°C for short periods. Keep me away from draughts.
I'm not too hungry, so will only want a weak dose of fertiliser during growing season.
Wipe my leaves with a damp cloth to remove accumulated dust.
If I'm growing too tall, or looking a bit unkempt, trim my stems with sharp shears.
I'm quite poisonous, so keep me away from kids and pets.
I'm great for your lungs as I help to purify the air!
