Hallway Plants FAQ

What Are The Benefits Of Hallway Plants?

Hallways aren’t always the easiest places to decorate. There are just simply no obvious natural furnishing choices like there are in say the bedroom or the living room! So, adding a few hallway plants is a unique way to make the entrance to your home look beautiful and inviting.

Feeling less stressed is something that we could all do with, at one time or another. Whether it's from work, family life, or just those day-to-day niggles, thankfully hallway plants might just be able to help us with this! Studies on plants have shown that they can be effective at reducing our stress levels and helping us feel calmer. And what better place for them to help us with this than immediately when we enter our homes?!

Hallway plants can also be great air purifiers because they are able to remove airborne toxins. So, having an array of hallway plants means that you can take in a beautiful breath of fresh air as soon as you enter your home!

How To Care For Hallway Plants?

The first thing to do when caring for your hallway plants is to consider the environment: how much light do your hallways get, if there’s room and whether there’s a draft. There’s a huge array of plants for all types of hallway environments - you just need to find one that’s best adapted! So basically, it’s a bit of a matching game.

Poorly lit hallways are best off decorated with plants that tolerate lower light conditions, like a Snake Plant, ZZ Plant or Monstera, and brightly lit hallways can host all sorts of plants such as a fiddle leaf fig or an alocasia!

You can find the perfect hallway plants for your home whether your space is large or small, you just need to be mindful of how much and how quickly your plants are going to grow. However, some plants will be suited to either because the size of their pot can dictate their size. For example, we love the Money Tree for many reasons because it has a charming twisted trunk and it’s super low maintenance. But another wonderful feature of the money tree is that its growth can be regulated by its pot size, making it the perfect hallway plant for smaller or larger spaces.

How To Fertilise And Water Hallway Plants?

The amount of water and fertiliser your hallway plants need is totally dependent on the type of plants you have, as well as the time of year,

Flowering plants tend to require more fertiliser than others because they need an excess of nutrients in order to bloom. Fertilising hallway plants that flower should be done every other watering during their growing season, which will generally be the warmer spring and summer months, and then reduce this to monthly in the colder months.

There are many kinds of hallway plants that you don’t really need to fertilise, for example, Cacti and Succulents. These hardy little plants can happily live without ever being fertilised, but if you do fancy topping up their nutrients, once every six months in the summer should be sufficient.

How often you water your hallway plants will also be dependent on the individual plant. Some plants, like the Snake Plant, don’t enjoy being overwatered because they are susceptible to root rot. So it’s best with these plants to let them dry out before watering them again. However, others will need checking every 5-7 days to ensure that their soil is kept slightly moist. The majority of plants will need watering less in the winter, so you can add an extra few days between checking in on them.

What Hallway Plant Varieties Do Exist?

Here are some of our favourite hallway plants, to get your creative interior design juices flowing!

The Snake Plant (Sansevieria zeylanica)

Bring your shady hallways to life with a Snake Plant! (Sansevieria Zeylanica)These hardy little plants make excellent hallway plants because they are incredibly robust and can survive in even the darkest conditions. Snake Plant’s dream conditions are areas with bright indirect light, they’re very draft tolerant and prefer their soil to dry out a little between waterings.

Are Hallway Plants Low-Maintenance Plants?

If you don’t have windows in your hallway then the best plants will be those that can thrive in low light conditions. We’ve put together some of our favourite low light / low maintenance plants for you here! If you’re lucky enough to have a lovely bright hallway, you can choose any plants you fancy!
