Air Purifying

A beautiful species of Elephant Ear that will reward good care with speedy growth. It has wonderful upright stems with loosely-crinkled heart-shaped leaves and prominent veins and should reach approximately 1.2 metres in height.

I have an upright, fleshy, rhizomatous stem that bears stout, cylindrical leaf stalks topped with lush, green, heart-shaped leaves with prominent veins.

Common names for the plant include Buddha's Hand and Dwarf's Hood Elephant Ear, owing to the pleasing shape of its leaves.

Alocasia cucullata come from tropical regions of South East Asia and China, so you won't be surprised to hear they like warmth and humidity. Don't panic if you have a dry home though, you can replicate its original environment by popping it on top of a pebble tray or by giving it a semi-regular misting.

Small: Growing pot size: 12 cm. Overall plant height including growing pot: 45-50 cm

Medium: Growing pot size: 19 cm. Overall plant height including growing pot: 50-60 cm

Pets: Harmful to pets

Fact: In some countries my corm is eaten to help treat rheumatism, gout, and general body aches. However, don't try this at home as Improperly cooked corm retains its poison!

Elephant Ear 'Spear Queen' Care Guide

Light

I prefer a partially shady or bright environment but keep me out of direct sun - it could burn my leaves.

Water

I like my soil to be lightly moist, but when I'm small I'm vulnerable to root rot so do not overdo it.

Temperature

I like it warm and humid so keep me in a warm room with no draughts.

Feeding

During the summer months I like regular fertilising with a plant food high in nitrogen.

Grooming

Older leaves die off as new ones emerge and should be removed as soon as they become tatty and unsightly. Long, lanky stems can be cut back to induce new, compact growth.

Care

The most important thing is keeping my humitidy levels high. If I'm in a dry room, keep me warm and misted.

Elephant Ear 'Spear Queen' General Information

Size

In the wild, Alocasias can grow as tall as 7m and almost as wild, forming ear-topped clusters. Yours is unlikely to get this big but they are relatively fast growers as long as their slightly fussy nature is appeased.

Toxicity

Keep me away from pets and children as I am toxic.
