Small tree ideal for your home

The Banyan tree is considered one of the world’s largest trees in terms of spread. In their natural environments, they can reach up to 30 metres tall and 200 meters wide! But don’t worry, their size is easily managed and they make wonderful container-grown houseplants!

With thick, oval-shaped leathery leaves (similar to the Rubber plant) and pale pink veins that contrast with the glossy greens of its foliage, this superstar will add texture and glamour to your home!

Key Benefits of Banyan Tree

Breathe better, feel better!

Tropical plants like the Banyan tree are wonderful to help to improve the quality of the air you breathe!

As part of photosynthesis, they take in carbon dioxide and with the help of light and water, they release oxygen back into the atmosphere. Through transpiration, they can also release up to 95% of the water they consume into the air acting like a natural humidifier in your indoors!

Not only that, their large leaves are great dust trappers, keeping nastiness away from your surfaces and lungs!

Banyan tree Plant Care Tips

The Banyan Tree is easier to care for than other ficus varieties but it still needs appropriate amounts of light, water and fertiliser to grow.

  • Ficus Audrey loves light and will thrive in an area with bright indirect sunlight or direct sunlight for 6 or more hours per day. Be careful with low light conditions, this will make the plant grow small leaves and leggy stems.
  • Make sure it has enough space to grow, avoiding enclosed spaces or an area too close to walls. The ideal spot will be near a sunny window.
  • Moderate regular watering will be appreciated. Keep the soil constantly moist, giving it a drink once the top layer gets dry. Be careful to not overwater the plant, this can cause sudden leaf drops, brown patches and fungal infections.
  • This tree is native to really hot tropical environments so, it will struggle in temperatures under 12º. So, keep the room warm!
  • High humidity is also preferred, mist the foliage often or place the plant on a tray with pebbles and water. A plant humidifier can also help.
  • Once the plant has been growing for a year, during the growing season, feed it monthly with a balanced diluted fertiliser after a watering session.
  • Remove any dying or dry leaves and aerial shoots during the growing season. When pruning it, be careful to not touch the sap as this can be irritating to the skin.
  • As a houseplant, the Banyan Tree will thrive potbound but it is still recommended to repot it every two to three years. Clay pots are preferred and adequate drainage is crucial.
