Space is a luxury if you ask us. Not all of us have a huge backyard and a spacious balcony for our lovely green friends (we mean plants, not leprechauns - just so we’re clear). You know what a great space-saving solution is? Vertical gardening.
Whether you're living in a city with limited outdoor space or simply looking to bring more greenery into your home, this gardening technique not only helps you maximise space but also adds fresh air, and even possibly homegrown food to your living environment. The latter depends on what you plant, but you get what we mean.
Oh, and vertical gardens are beautiful. Once you get your lush wall growing, we bet it’s going to be the backdrop of many Zoom meetings. You’re going to be so proud of it. We understand why you’d want to show it off!
Vertical Garden Ideas
Hanging Pots and Planters

When we started talking about vertical gardening, we bet that you immediately thought of those big structures made of wood or metal. But they don’t have to be. You can always start vertically - literally. When you’ve got your indoor plants all lined up on a shelf or the like, why not look up? You can always get a row of hanging pots so that you can maximise your space. You can do this on a budget or spend as much as you like on it.
The kitchen? The same goes. You can set up some hanging pots to make the space extra homey and functional - you can plant herbs! Just make sure you account for drips. If you water your hanging plants, water will tend to make its way below the plant. You can easily find solutions for that like placing them over another plant or setting a drip tray.
Vertical Herb Garden

Decorative and space-saving (our fave combo), vertical herb gardens are great for plant-loving home cooks. Herb gardens don’t always have to be indoors. These can thrive outdoors as well. You can easily grow basil, rosemary, thyme, oregano, and mint. When the winter season comes, all you have to do is keep your little lovelies indoors and you could have fresh herbs to use under the right conditions. No more having to run to the market for a sprig of rosemary!
Seeds for vertical herb gardens will be easy to acquire. You can also pick up plants at your local store. Just make sure to trim them from time to time and do water as needed. Oh! A quick tip before we leave the herb section. Since you’re going to stack your herbs vertically, be mindful of how tall they can grow. Cilantro or parsley are pretty tall, so make space for them or stack them on top.
Trellises and Arbors

More often than not, people think of trellises when they hear about vertical gardening. They make great outdoor wall garden ideas because they can give you aesthetics as well as some privacy. English Ivy, honeysuckle, and bougainvillaea are some of the many plants you can grow with a trellis. You want climbing flowers and vines here.
Arbours can be as huge and as simple as you want them to be. Like trellises, they can be decorated with climbing plants. The best, simplified difference for us would be that trellises act more of as a wall, while arbours are focal points and shaded walkways.
Vertical Planter Towers
If you want to get serious and plant an array of veggies, herbs, and flowers, you may benefit from vertical plant towers. This is a clever vertical garden idea for small spaces. Although you can get larger ones to place in your outdoor garden, too.
Vertical planter towers are easy to water. They usually have a water reservoir at the top and water will simply flow down. Sometimes some plants need more water than others. If that’s the case, water directly on the pocket.
Repurposed Materials
We love DIY projects here at Bloombox. If you don’t want to shell out a large sum of cash for a vertical garden project, we get it! We’ve repurposed old wooden shoe racks to make our own vertical garden space. Step ladders are also clever vertical garden ideas for small spaces.
Wooden crates, wood pallets, pipes, and those closet organisers on the door? You can get creative. These will add character to your garden. Just don’t go overboard… We’ve learned the hard way that the line between a scrap yard and a DIY garden sometimes gets blurred. Beauty is the eye of the beholder, we suppose.
