Firework Begonia

English name:

Firework Begonia

Latin name:

Firework Rex Begonia

About me:

The loud, swirly patterns on my leaves are what gives me my common name. My leaves are soft too, so trace my spiralling colours with your finger when in need of calming.

Useful to know:

Origin

I am native to moist subtropical and tropical climates.

Height/Growth

I won't grow much taller than 18" but I can grow far and wide.

Light

I prefer shaded, humid conditions and rich, aerated soil like that found on the forest floor.

Water

Wait until the top inch or so of my soil has dried, and then water me until it comes out of my drainage holes. I also love humidity so make sure you mist me regularly!

Temperature

I grow best in a temperature range of 15-22°C.

Feeding

A little fertiliser during the growing season will do me well but makes sure its very weak or diluted.

Grooming

A little fertiliser during the growing season will do me well but makes sure its very weak or diluted.

Care

If the edges of my foliage turn brown and looks burned, I'm probably getting too much sunlight; if I grow long and gangly I'm probably not getting enough.

Toxicity

I contain soluble calcium oxalates, which are toxic to cats and dogs.

Fact

You wouldn't guess it from looking at me, but I am closely related to melons, cucumbers and pumpkins!
