English name:
YuccaLatin name:
Yucca ElephantipesAbout me:
I have long, sword-like, yellow-green, arching leaves, which grow into a rosette from the top of a bare trunk. Unlike other Yucca varieties, my leaves are spineless.Useful to know:
Origin
I am native to some parts of the US, Mexico and Central America.
Height/Growth
I can reach up to 2m indoors, but I am very slow growing, so you'll have to be patient.
Light
I like bright, direct sunlight but will tolerate some light shade; however, this will slow my growth and lighten the colour of my leaves.
Water
Allow the top of my soil to dry out before watering. In low light conditions, allow half of the soil to dry out first. I can cope with some degree of drought but please ensure there is adequate drainage and don't allow me to sit in water.
Temperature
I am super adaptable so should endure all household temperatures.
Feeding
I don't need much feeding but an occasional weak feed would be nice.
Grooming
I don't need much grooming.
Care
My leaf tips are sharper than they look so make sure you take care whilst handling and repotting.
Toxicity
Keep me away from pets and children as I can be toxic.
Fact
My tough leaves are strong enough to be used by weavers to make baskets and jewellery, while my trunk is used to make a rich soap. Click here to buy Yucca Elephantipes.
