English name:
Mandarin PlantLatin name:
Chlorophytum Orchidastrum 'Fire Flash'About me:
A member of the Spider Plant family, I am easy to care for and grow, but much more dramatic than my (slightly drab) cousins!Useful to know:
Origin
I come from sub-tropical parts of Southern and Western Africa, specifically Tanzania.
Height/Growth
I will grow up to 50 cm in height when grown indoors but can reach double that outdoors.
Light
I like bright indirect light to part shade but no direct sunlight please.
Water
I like my soil to be kept moist but not soggy. As a subtropical plant, I like an environment with high humidity, so please mist me.
Temperature
Room temperatures of 16-24 °C are perfect. I don't like cold draughts!
Feeding
Fertilise me once a month in spring and summer.
Grooming
I grow white flowers that will only last a week so cut the spikes after blooming unless you're after my seeds for propagation.
Care
If you notice brown spots or edges on my leaves, it could be a sensitivity to chlorine and fluoride in tap water. To combat this, collect rainwater or leave tap water in an open container overnight before giving me a drink.
Toxicity
I am toxic so please don't eat me.
Fact
I am a relatively new houseplant, only introduced into Western homes in the 1990s.
