The bamboo orchid!

The Kumiko cultivar produces tall stems that closely resemble densely packed thickets of Bamboo, its branches are covered in large frilled blooms! The entire bloom is an ombre of delicate pinks with a sunny bright yellow center. It is easy to see why the Dendrobium orchid has been nicknamed the bamboo orchid!

Each flower emits a sweet scent that is both pleasant and delicate. These petite blooms will last for several months before returning to a vegetative state.

Dendrobium 'Kumiko' Plant Care Tips

How to care for information:

  • Do not place your Bamboo Orchid indirect light. Make sure it is safely tucked out of reach from the sun's harmful rays. Their leaves are susceptible to burning if exposed to direct sunlight.
  • A sufficient amount of bright light must be provided. Make sure the plant receives a minimum of 50% bright light during the day.
  • Temperature fluctuating is key to encouraging your orchid to rebloom. There should be an 8 to 12 °C difference between day and night temperatures.
  • Blooms usually last 6 - 8 weeks in the ideal environment. Once they have fallen off, your orchid will need to sense a temperature change to rebloom. You can encourage this by:
  • Maintaining cool day and night temperatures in the Autumn or Fall of 10 °C to 15 °C.
  • Elevate the day and night temperatures in spring once buds appear from 16 °C to 18 °C.
  • Maintain day temperatures once blooms form at 27 °C to 32 °C. And provide lots of light!

Care Instructions

Place your Bamboo orchid in a shaded spot where it will receive plenty of bright indirect light or filtered light.

Water sparingly in the winter. Your plant is dormant and will not be actively growing. The soil should be damp to the touch, not sopping and should never dry out.

In the spring and Summer or once blooms have appeared, increase the watering. Check every 5 days to make sure the soil is consistently damp.

Provide cool temperature in the Autumn and Winter season, 10°C to 15°C. And during the day in Spring and summer keep the temperature warm from 21°C to 24°C.

Fertilizer:We highly recommend using a balanced fertilizer formulated for orchids. 0.02-0.02-0.02. Fertilize with every other watering once buds appear into the summer.

Cease feeding your orchid after the blooms have fallen off.

Yes, the Bamboo Orchid is toxic and not safe for consumption.

Soil: We recommend using a mix of coco coir, sphagnum moss and orchid bark mix. You want to achieve a soil that is well-draining and allows airflow at the root zone. The Cococoir will help to retain water and nutrients.

Propagation: This is difficult and usually consists of separating plantlets from the mother plant.

Repotting: Hydrate the root zone and media for easy removal. And plant into fresh damp soil. This can be done every 12-24 months after the plant has lost its blooms.

Cleaning Tip: Check the axis of the leaves and stem for any mealy bugs. Wipe leaves down gently with a microfiber cloth.
